BJP's Sujeeth Kumar Wants 'Lord' Title Removed from British Viceroys in Textbooks and Govt Docs
December 5, 2025
On December 5, 2025, BJP leader Sujeeth Kumar urged the Indian government to stop using the title 'Lord' when referring to British Viceroys and Governor Generals in NCERT textbooks, government documents, and official websites. He said this practice spreads a "colonial mindset" even 75 years after India gained independence.
Raising the issue in the Rajya Sabha during Zero Hour, Mr. Kumar said he checked many school textbooks and official websites. He found many references to colonial figures like Lord Curzon, Lord Mountbatten, Lord Dalhousie, and Lord Leighton. The Ministry of Culture, Press Information Bureau, Archaeological Survey of India, and Raj Bhavan of Bihar still use these titles.
Mr. Kumar argued that these titles were given by British rulers to serve their imperial goals and promote racial superiority. "This was a title given by the British to the British for the British needs," he said. He questioned why India keeps placing these colonial officials on a "demigod-like pedestal" when they committed "horrendous and barbaric crimes" against Indians. He pointed out that Indian freedom fighters do not get such reverence.
He added, "A vibrant democracy like ours, which also is the largest and oldest democracy on earth, should not continue this practice as it perpetuates a colonial mindset, goes against the spirit of social equality, and also goes against the letter and spirit of our own constitution."
Mr. Kumar also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's renaming of Rajpath to Kartavya Path. He said such changes symbolize a shift from colonial attitudes to national pride and responsibility.
Highlighting PM Modi's 76th Independence Day speech, he noted the Panch Pran's second resolve to free India from any "slavery mindset." "In no part of our existence, not even in the deepest corners of our mind or habits, should there be any ounce of slavery," Mr. Kumar said. "We have to liberate ourselves from the slavery mindset, which is visible in innumerable things within and around us."
