Karnataka’s 10-day Winter Session of the State legislature opened on December 6 in Belagavi. The session is clouded by ongoing leadership tensions within the ruling party. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar recently announced a truce after two breakfast meetings, saying they will follow the party high command's lead. But uncertainty remains among their supporters. The opposition parties, BJP and Janata Dal (S), are ready to turn up the heat. They blame the leadership fight for the "collapse of administrative machinery" and plan to challenge the government strongly. Law and order is a major focus. A viral video showed inmates partying inside Parappana Agrahara Central Prison. Over 50 mobile phones were found there, and a terror suspect reportedly used a phone inside. Police officers are also facing criminal cases. The Opposition says this shows the government failed to maintain order. Farmers’ problems will also be highlighted, especially issues with maize procurement and sugarcane farming. The BJP plans a farmers’ protest outside the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha, where the session is held. The newly cleared Karnataka Hate Speech and Hate Crimes (Prevention) Bill is expected to create buzz. The Opposition claims the bill targets their leaders and will strongly oppose it. Since the session is in North Karnataka, development topics will be raised, including irrigation projects like the Upper Krishna Project Phase Three and the Mahadayi project. In Bengaluru, the Opposition will oppose the controversial tunnel road project led by Deputy CM Shivakumar and highlight poor road conditions. Other issues like man-animal conflicts, the SIT probe in the Dharmasthala case, and school closures linked to Karnataka Public Schools will also feature. The Winter Session promises to be lively with many hot topics on the table.
