11 Killed in Pretoria Illegal Bar Mass Shooting, Including Children
December 6, 2025
At least 11 people were killed when gunmen stormed an illegal bar in Pretoria’s Saulsville township early Saturday. The dead include a three-year-old child, a 12-year-old boy, and a 16-year-old girl. Another 14 people were wounded in the attack. Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said, “25 people were shot,” with 10 dying on the spot and another later in hospital. Around 4:30 am, three gunmen entered the illegal shebeen and "indiscriminately fired at a group of men who were drinking." Mathe added, “We are having a serious challenge when it comes to these illegal and unlicensed liquor premises,” and noted that many mass shootings happen in such places. The motive remains unknown. No arrests have been made yet. Police have launched a manhunt for the three suspects. South Africa suffers from high crime rates, with many shootings tied to gang violence or alcohol-fuelled fights. Police data shows about 63 people were killed daily from April to September. Recent months saw several mass shootings in Johannesburg, Durban, and the Eastern Cape.
