10 Blackbucks Die at Jamshedpur Zoo from Suspected Bacterial Infection
December 7, 2025
At least 10 blackbucks have died at the Tata Steel Zoological Park in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, from December 1 to 6, 2025. Officials say a bacterial infection is likely responsible. The latest death was reported on December 6. The carcasses were sent to Ranchi Veterinary College for tests. Dr. Naim Akhtar, deputy director of the zoo, told PTI, "Ten blackbucks have died to date in the park. The carcass was sent to Ranchi Veterinary College for examination and to ascertain the exact cause of the death. It seems to be a bacterial infection." Dr. Pragya Lakra, assistant professor at Ranchi Veterinary College, said, "It is suspected to be H.S. (Haemorrhagic Septicaemia), which is a bacterial disease caused by Pasteurella species of bacteria. The disease is also known as Pasteurellosis." Further tests are scheduled for December 8 to confirm the disease. The zoo has 18 blackbucks and now only 8 remain. Jamshedpur Divisional Forest Officer Saba Alam said samples were sent to the veterinary college and the Central Zoo Authority informed. Dr. M.K. Gupta of Ranchi Veterinary College explained, "Pasteurella is a bacterial disease which spreads in the body very fast and affects the lungs, causing sudden death." Symptoms include high fever, neck swelling, and diarrhoea. Dr. Akhtar said they are taking strong preventive steps and "anti-bacterial treatment is underway, and the situation is under control now." Following this, Birsa Biological Park in Ranchi is on alert. It has 69 blackbucks and is spraying anti-viral and anti-bacterial medicines. Veterinarian O.P. Sahu said, "We have already taken precautions by spraying anti-viral and anti-bacterial medicines. Besides, bleaching is being sprayed in vulnerable places on a regular basis." Birsa zoo spans 104 hectares and houses 1,450 animals and birds of 83 species.
