Nanjangud Rasabale Banana Cultivation Expands with ₹60,000 Subsidy and New Disease Controls
December 7, 2025
The Nanjangud Rasabale banana, famous for its special taste and GI tag, is seeing new life. Its cultivation area has risen to 80 acres in Nanjangud. Farmers now receive a one-time subsidy of ₹60,000 to grow this crop.
Panama wilt disease once hit Rasabale hard, causing fewer farmers to grow it. Now, scientists and horticulture experts are fighting the disease. They provide healthy plants and disease control to help farmers.
The Department of Horticulture, University of Horticultural Sciences (UHS) Bagalkot, JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra Suttur, and the National Centre for Banana Tiruchi work together to protect and grow Rasabale. The College of Horticulture, Yelwal Mysuru, supports this mission too. Their goal is to expand growing areas by at least 50 acres every year.
Alongside Rasabale, other GI crops like Mysuru Mallige jasmine and Mysuru Veeledele betel leaf are also promoted. Jasmine grows on about 5 hectares, and betel leaf on nearly 100 hectares in Mysuru.
UHS scientists have created value-added Rasabale products to boost sales. These were shown at the GI Mahotsav 3.0 at Mysuru’s CSIR-CFTRI campus, where many visitors showed interest.
Joint Director of Horticulture Manjunath Angadi said, "The crop area is gradually increasing. Farmers should use the subsidy and technical help available." Associate Professor Girigowda Manjunath added, "Panama wilt caused a sharp decline in Rasabale. We now provide effective solutions to restore farming confidence. Our efforts show good results."
