India's Big AI Push: 13,500 Future Experts to Train with New Labs in Non-Metro Cities

August 9, 2025

India's journey to become a global leader in Artificial Intelligence just got turbocharged! In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Jitin Prasada, announced the country's bold plan to build a strong and inclusive AI ecosystem. The secret recipe? Training thousands of AI experts and setting up AI labs far beyond big cities. The government is all set to back 500 PhD fellows, 5,000 postgraduates, and 8,000 undergraduates with AI skills. That's a whopping 13,500 future AI superheroes ready to power India’s rise in technology. But there's more spice added to this mix — AI labs are coming up in Tier II and Tier III cities, making AI education accessible to everyone. "IndiaAI, in collaboration with NIELIT, has identified 27 IndiaAI Data and AI labs in Tier II and Tier III cities across the country," the minister shared. Plus, 174 ITIs and Polytechnics nominated by states and union territories will also get these cool new AI labs. To make sure the workforce is AI-ready from the ground up, foundational courses on Data and AI — like Data Annotation and Data Curation — approved by NCVET, have been launched in these labs. This means future students will learn the tricks of AI early on, preparing them for the smart world ahead. Jitin Prasada summed up the exciting plan, saying India's AI strategy aims to position the country as a global AI leader while building a robust and inclusive AI ecosystem. So, get ready for an AI revolution that's coming to smaller cities near you, making technology learning as common as your daily chai!
