The Kerala High Court has asked the Director-General of Police to file a report on a body found in a marshy area in Kalamassery. The body is suspected to be Suraj Lama, who went missing in Kochi after arriving from Kuwait on October 10, 2025. The court also directed the Superintendent of Government Medical College, Kalamassery, to share Lama’s medical history and explain what happened at the hospital after he vanished. The court said it hopes the body is not Lama’s. When told that post-mortem, scientific tests, and DNA profiling are ongoing, the court questioned why such a key area near the Judicial City was left unsupervised for over a month. It also ordered the police’s special investigation team to track down Lama’s belongings. Earlier, the court added the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit and the Social Justice department to a habeas corpus case filed by Santon Lama, Suraj Lama’s son. Suraj had been missing since October 10 after being deported from Kuwait, reportedly due to alcohol poisoning. The police had taken him into custody on October 8 and admitted him at Government Medical College Hospital, Kalamassery, from where he went missing. Santon Lama, who came with a cousin after police called, could not identify the body found on December 1 because it was heavily decomposed. The police sent Santon’s blood samples to labs in Thiruvananthapuram and Hyderabad to confirm if the remains are his father’s. Santon accused the hospital of negligence, stating, "They first recorded him as an ‘unknown person’ and corrected the entry to his real name after the case gained media attention. Is this how the system works in Kerala?" The hospital reportedly allowed Suraj Lama, who suffered memory loss, to leave without supervision. The case remains under close watch as investigations and tests continue.
