Tangedco asks HT consumers to install power quality meters

The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) has sent a communication to High Tension (HT) consumers, stating that they must install power quality meters and share the recorded data within one year. This requirement also applies to all applicants seeking new connections of 11 kv and above, as well as all bulk consumers. Tangedco has requested chief engineers to communicate the technical specifications to consumers. However, the PQ Welfare Consortium has raised concerns about this directive, stating that there are no regulations allowing Tangedco to require consumers to purchase the meters at their own expense. They have called for the immediate withdrawal of any circular that violates existing regulations. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission implemented a supply code amendment in September of last year to standardize harmonics levels for consumers with 11 KV or above. According to A.D. Thirumoorthy of the PQ Welfare Consortium, Tangedco officials should visit consumer sites to check harmonics levels and issue notices for meter installation only if necessary. They should not require consumers to purchase and install the meters within a year. Thirumoorthy also highlighted the financial burden this places on High Tension consumers, particularly textile mills that are already struggling due to a slowdown in orders. Not all units can afford the expensive meters.
