A photograph of Benjamin Basumatary, a suspended UPPL leader in Assam, has gone viral, causing controversy ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. The image shows Basumatary lying on a bed with a stack of Rs 500 notes, while only wearing a traditional ‘gamosa’. UPPL chief Pramod Boro clarified that Basumatary was suspended from the party on January 10, following complaints of corruption and misuse of funds in government schemes. However, Basumatary defended himself, stating that the photo is five years old and was taken during a party where he posed with borrowed money for fun.

The incident has drawn criticism from opposition parties, who have accused the BJP-led alliance, of which UPPL is a part, of corruption. The leader of the opposition, Debabrata Saikia of the Congress party, condemned the incident, referring to it as a ‘blatant display of corruption’ that requires immediate action.
