The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), representing major telecom players like Reliance Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea, has urged the Indian government to ban the sale of Wi-Fi 6E routers that utilize the 6GHz spectrum band. COAI’s Director General, SP Kochhar, emphasized the urgency of the matter in a letter to the Department of Telecom. According to PTI, COAI raised concerns over the sale of these routers through various e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, and Moglix, as well as offline traders.
The crux of the issue lies in the lack of policy decision by the government regarding the use of frequencies in the 6GHz band. As of now, the government has not provided clarity on the legality of Wi-Fi 6E routers operating in this frequency range.
