GST Revenue in Bengaluru Zone Almost Triples in 6 Years

Bengaluru zone has achieved significant growth in terms of revenue from Goods and Services Tax (GST). According to Roopam Kapoor, the principal chief commissioner of central tax, Bengaluru zone, the revenue for 2022-23 stands at Rs 62,333 crore. This is a remarkable increase from the initial revenue of Rs 23,253 crore in the first year of GST implementation in 2017-18. Additionally, the number of taxpayers in the zone has risen to over 2.8 lakh. Kapoor stated that the government is providing refunds worth Rs 6,000 crore annually.

It is worth noting that the introduction of GST faced skepticism and doubts. However, it has shown immense growth and success over the years. Kapoor mentioned that critics had concerns about the transition from the old system and the benefits for essential goods, as well as doubts regarding the participation of states. Despite these uncertainties, GST has thrived and proven to be beneficial.

Bharat Electronics Limited CMD, Bhanu Prakash Srivastava, reflected on the challenges under the previous tax system where transportation across states required multiple forms and verification processes. This led to difficulties and corrupt practices. However, with the implementation of GST, the transportation process has become simpler and more efficient. Any urgently required item can now be transported with minimal documentation, whether it is from Jammu & Kashmir, the northeast, or Visakhapatnam.

K Balamurugan, additional director general, DG-Systems, Bengaluru, shared plans for an upcoming GST app. This app aims to improve efficiency and reduce human interference in the system. It is expected to contribute to increased revenue.

In conclusion, Bengaluru zone has witnessed significant growth in GST revenue over the past six years. The tax regime has not only tripled the revenue but also streamlined the market and eased the process of doing business. The success of GST proves its effectiveness and importance in the Indian economy.
