Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, also known as Prachanda, has announced plans to significantly increase the export of electricity to neighboring India. Prachanda stated that the country aims to boost the electricity supply from the current 450 MW to 10,000 MW within the next 10 years. A preliminary bilateral agreement has already been signed between Nepal and India to facilitate this venture. Notably, Prachanda also emphasized the efforts being made by Nepal to attract foreign investment in its hydropower sector. During a recent visit to India, he held discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on clean energy, which was viewed as a major step forward for the power sector in the South Asian region. Prachanda expressed his belief that this achievement will not only contribute to a conducive environment for foreign investment, but also facilitate the construction of international transmission networks for long-term power trade. In order to solidify the agreements made with India, both countries are maintaining continuous communication through their respective authorities. As part of this collaboration, plans are underway for the completion of the 400 KV Butawal-Gorakhpur transmission line, while two additional 400 KV transmission lines, Inaruwa-Purniya and Dodhara-Bareilly, are also being considered. Furthermore, Nepal intends to develop policies that promote the production and utilization of green energy. Prachanda revealed that preparations are in progress for signing an agreement among the concerned agencies of Nepal, India, and Bangladesh, with the aim of commencing power trade between Nepal and Bangladesh during the upcoming rainy season. He also highlighted plans to establish a connection with China through the construction of the 220 KV Chilime-Kerung transmission line, for which a feasibility study has been completed. Prachanda expressed confidence that long-term and significant agreements in the power sector will be signed during his visit to China in September. Prior to this visit, he will participate in the 78th General Assembly of the United Nations in the US. Overall, these developments highlight Nepal’s commitment to enhancing its power supply and promoting sustainable energy solutions through international collaboration and investment.
