Popular chatting platform Discord has begun notifying users impacted by a data breach that occurred in March. Approximately three months after the attack was announced, Discord has finally informed its affected users. According to a data breach notification that was filed with the US-based Office of the Maine Attorney General, out of the 150 million monthly users on Discord, only 180 had their sensitive information exposed during the attack.
This indicates that users are more likely to be impacted by the Discord.io breach, which impacted 760,000 users, resulting in the complete shutdown of the site, as reported by Engadget. Discord.io allows users on Discord to create custom links for their channels.
On August 14, a major data breach occurred due to a vulnerability in The discord.io website’s code. This vulnerability allowed a third-party attacker to steal information, including hashed passwords, billing information, and Discord IDs, and sell it on a breached data forum.
Discord.io has released a statement saying, “We have decided to take down our site until further notice.” In order to mitigate the effects of the breach and prevent similar incidents in the future, Discord is planning to perform a complete rewrite of its website’s code as well as completely overhaul its security practices.
This breach is separate from the Discord breach that was mentioned earlier this week in a report. This incident was related to Discord and not the separate entity of Discord.io. Earlier this year, an unauthorized person gained access to Discord data using a third-party service provider. The hacker stole personal information, such as driver’s license numbers, from 180 users’ service tickets.
To minimize the damage caused, Discord is reaching out to affected users via email and offering credit monitoring and identity theft protection services. Alongside this, Discord has also laid off around 37 employees, which represents 4% of the total workforce. The layoffs mainly affected teams in marketing, talent, and public policy, as reported by The Information.
