India needs additional two billion sq ft healthcare-related real estate, says study

India needs an additional 2 billion sq ft of healthcare-related real estate to serve its population of 1.42 billion people, as the country is one of the fastest-growing economies with a high spending potential in healthcare. According to a joint study by Knight Frank and Berkadia, there is a considerable gap between the current number of hospital beds available and the required number. The healthcare industry, particularly hospitals, accounts for 80% of the healthcare market in India. The private sector holds a 63% share of the total. The study also highlights investment opportunities in medical infrastructure and research and development. Additionally, India has become a popular destination for medical tourism due to its affordable and quality medical procedures. Despite facing challenges in healthcare infrastructure, India ranked 10th out of 46 destinations globally in the Medical Tourism Index for 2020-21. The country’s tourism ministry has formulated a national strategy to further strengthen the healthcare ecosystem under the ‘Heal in India’ initiative.
