The Karnataka State Dr. Gangubai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University has launched a course offering training in traditional combat sports. The course, offered in association with the Karnataka Sahasa Kala Academy of Ramanagara and Hassan Raghu, provides training in various traditional combat sports such as Malla Kambha, Kalaripayattu, and traditional wrestling.

The inaugural ceremony of the course was conducted by renowned music director Hamsalekha. In his speech, Hamsalekha encouraged students to combine their academics with martial arts and combat sports training, challenging the misconception that only academically weak individuals pursue these activities.

Professor Nagesh Bettakote, Vice Chancellor of the university, highlighted that the course would also benefit students of dance. Interested students from the university can obtain the training free of cost, while others can access the courses for a stipulated fee. The courses offered not only focus on martial arts but also encompass various traditional sports.

Hassan Raghu, a representative of the academy, stated that in addition to introducing students to India’s traditional art forms, the course would also teach them self-defense techniques.
