The Court of Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities has ordered the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to ensure that airline websites and travel portals are accessible to people who are visually impaired. If airlines and travel agents fail to comply, they may be barred from selling air tickets on any websites in the country. The DGCA has also been directed to enforce fines for non-compliance and provide a report on action taken within 30 days. The court has further instructed the aviation regulator to improve the ability of disabled individuals to indicate their need for special assistance at airports. Additionally, the court has addressed the issue of web check-ins for disabled persons, stating that they should be allowed to avail this service on seats that are not emergency exit row seats. The court’s order comes in response to a petition filed by Amar Jain, founder of NGO Mission Accessibility.
