16th Finance Commission to Take Holistic View of Issues Including GST: Arvind Panagariya

The 16th Finance Commission, chaired by Arvind Panagariya, aims to take a comprehensive view of various issues, including the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and the allocation of taxes and resources between the Centre and states, according to a statement by Panagariya. He remarked that it is premature for him to provide any opinion on the ongoing GST debate in states like Karnataka. Panagariya noted that questions related to GST are integral to the work of the Finance Commission, which strives to incorporate different criteria in revenue distribution among states. He also emphasised the importance of focusing on reform areas such as the farm sector, labour, and urbanisation, and suggested that the new government should pursue policies for trade liberalisation and privatisation after the elections. Panagariya further stated that India’s economic growth is attracting attention in the global economy, and the country is perceived as a major counterweight to China, particularly in terms of geopolitical dynamics. He highlighted the need for India to capitalise on the current momentum and ensure that it achieves its full potential. Panagariya emphasised the importance of providing a conducive policy framework, robust infrastructure, and efficient implementation of reforms in order to achieve sustainable and inclusive growth.
