Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his concerns about the Indian government’s crackdown on Canadian diplomats, stating that it was making life difficult for millions of people in Canada and India. This comes after Canada announced the withdrawal of 41 diplomats in response to India’s threat of revoking their status. The tensions have arisen from Trudeau’s suggestion that Indian agents were involved in the murder of a Sikh separatist leader in Canada, an allegation which India denies. Trudeau emphasized that this crackdown would hinder travel, trade, and studies for Indians in Canada. The dispute has also garnered support from the U.S State Department, which urged India to cooperate in the ongoing Canadian investigation. India, however, rejected the idea of violating the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations and stated that the current state of bilateral relations warranted a parity in mutual diplomatic presence.
