One of the warmest winters to pave way for a hotter summer

The city of Chennai recently experienced one of its warmest winters, and now it seems that a blazing summer is on the way. The above-normal temperatures are a result of rapid urbanization and global warming. The night temperatures have risen, and experts believe that this is in contrast to the 1970s when temperatures frequently dropped below 19 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department highlights that global warming has led to warmer winters across the country. The impact of climate change is becoming increasingly visible. For instance, this February was recorded as the warmest in India since 1877, with average maximum temperatures reaching 29.5 degrees Celsius. In south India, the average minimum temperature was 1.43 degrees Celsius above normal, and the average maximum temperature was 0.97 degrees Celsius above normal. While we cannot confirm climate change based on just 10 years’ worth of data, the impact is undeniable. The chief meteorologist at Skymet Weather, Mahesh Palawat, stated that winter is getting warmer nationwide. The India Meteorological Department predicts above-normal temperatures in peninsular India, including Tamil Nadu, between March and May. This period could bring a heatwave that lasts 6-9 days, especially in coastal areas like Chennai. The phenomenon can be attributed to El Nino, which causes warmer than normal sea surface temperatures. However, El Nino is expected to weaken and become neutral. According to N Senthamarai Kannan, the director of the regional weather forecasting centre at IMD, maximum temperatures in March will be near normal for most of Tamil Nadu, while minimum temperatures will be above normal.
