US hands over 105 trafficked antiquities to Indian officials

The US government has formally handed over 105 trafficked antiquities to the Indian authorities in New York. This move comes after India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to the US, where both countries agreed to work towards a Cultural Property Agreement to combat the illegal trafficking of cultural artefacts. The handover of these antiquities signifies the commitment of the US and India in preventing the illicit trade of cultural heritage. The artefacts will now be transported to India and will be under the custody of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) until a decision is made on whether to repatriate them to their respective states or put them on display at ASI-run museums. These 105 artefacts represent a wide geographical spread, with 47 originating from Eastern India, 27 from South India, 22 from Central India, 6 from North India, and 3 from Western India. The historicity of the antiquities ranges from the 2nd and 3rd Century CE to the 18th and 19th Century CE, and they include objects made of terracotta, stone, metal, and wood. This handover highlights the importance of international cooperation in protecting and preserving cultural heritage, and signifies a step forward in the bilateral collaboration between the US and India in combating the illicit trafficking of cultural artefacts.
