Jindal Stainless supplies high-strength alloy steel for Chandrayaan-3 mission

Jindal Stainless Ltd (JSL) announced that it has supplied a high-strength alloy steel grade to ISRO for the Chandrayaan-3 mission. The specialised alloy steel grade, which is usually imported from several countries, was meticulously developed over a span of three years. JSL stated that the alloy steel grade was developed and supplied to ISRO to meet the stringent quality standards and specifications of the crucial project. This marks a significant achievement in India’s pursuit of self-reliance in space technology.

The high-strength alloy steel grade supplied by JSL has been used in the motor casing of Chandrayaan-3, India’s ambitious third lunar mission. The alloy steel grade has heat-resistant properties that shield the motor from shocks and elevated temperatures. JSL highlighted that these properties remain intact even under the most extreme thermal conditions, emphasizing its reliability and suitability for critical space missions.

On Wednesday, Chandrayaan-3’s lander module successfully touched down on the lunar surface, making India the fourth country to achieve this feat and the first to reach the south pole of the Moon. The successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 is being hailed as a historic moment for the country.

Abhyuday Jindal, Managing Director of JSL, expressed pride in the company’s contribution to the Chandrayaan-3 mission. He stated that the successful landing strengthens India’s self-reliance narrative and showcases the company’s constant innovation in providing indigenous, high-quality materials for nationally important projects. JSL has previously supplied materials for key defence and space projects of DRDO and ISRO, including the PSLV.

This achievement by JSL highlights the growing capabilities and achievements of India’s space program. The use of indigenous materials and technology in critical missions like Chandrayaan-3 showcases India’s commitment to self-reliance in the space sector. With this milestone, ISRO and JSL have set a new benchmark for future space missions, further propelling India’s position as a key player in the global space industry.
