The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a preliminary enquiry (PE) to investigate an alleged case of corruption in the renovation of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s official residence. The probe was initiated based on a complaint filed by a former member of India Against Corruption (IAC), who claimed that around ₹45 crore was spent on the renovation, which he believes to be excessive and irregular. The complaint alleges that the renovation work was conducted without following proper procedures and that inflated bills were presented to justify the excessive expenditure.

According to the complainant, who had also approached the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) earlier, the renovation work undertaken from 2015 to 2020 included several changes and additions to the CM’s residence, including the construction of new rooms and washrooms. The complainant has raised concerns about the excessive costs associated with these renovations and doubts the validity of the bills presented for the work done.

The CBI has begun its preliminary inquiry to ascertain the veracity of the allegations and gather evidence related to the alleged financial irregularities. The agency will examine the documents and records pertaining to the renovation work, as well as question officials involved in the process. If any wrongdoing is found during the preliminary enquiry, a full-fledged investigation will be initiated.

Arvind Kejriwal, the Delhi Chief Minister, has not yet responded to the allegations. However, his party, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has dismissed the claims as politically motivated and an attempt to tarnish Kejriwal’s image. The AAP has stated that all the renovation work was conducted under the jurisdiction of the Public Works Department (PWD) and followed all necessary procedures.

This latest investigation adds to the previous controversies surrounding the renovation of Kejriwal’s residence. In 2015, a complaint was filed with the ACB against the CM and his party members for alleged irregularities in the renovation work. However, no further action was taken at that time. The current developments indicate that the CBI is taking the complaint seriously and aims to determine whether any corruption and financial misconduct occurred during the renovation.

As the investigation progresses, it remains to be seen if the allegations will be proven and what consequences, if any, will be faced by Arvind Kejriwal and others involved in the renovation process. Corruption charges can have significant political implications, and the outcome of this case may impact the reputation of the Delhi Chief Minister and his party.
