Gem-set, Enamelled Tipu Sultan Sword Sells for GBP 100,800 at Auction in the UK

A gem-set and enamelled sword, believed to be from the personal armory of 18th century Mysore king Tipu Sultan, has gone under the hammer for GBP 100,800 at Christie’s auction house in London. The sword was sold as part of the Art of the Islamic and Indian World sale. Another sword belonging to Tipu Sultan was also up for auction but remained unsold. The set of swords, previously unrecorded, come from the collection of Charles, the 1st Marquess and 2nd Earl Cornwallis. The swords have been passed down through the Eliot family since they were presented to Charles in the late 18th century. The proceeds from the sale will be used for repairs to the Port Eliot estate in Cornwall, ensuring its preservation for future generations. The sword’s provenance can be traced back to the fall of Tipu Sultan’s kingdom in the Anglo-Mysore wars. With a guide price of GBP 1,500,000-2,000,000, the other sword failed to attract bids and remained unsold.
