Local authorities in a village in Nepal registered the country’s first same-sex marriage on Wednesday, according to officials and activists. This comes five months after the Supreme Court issued an interim order allowing for same-sex marriages in the predominantly conservative nation. The marriage took place between Ram Bahadur (Maya) Gurung, a 36-year-old individual who identifies as female, and Surendra Pandey, a 26-year-old individual who identifies as male. The couple, who have been in a relationship for nine years, had previously undergone a marriage ceremony according to Hindu rituals in 2016. The marriage was officially registered at the Dordi rural municipality office in the Lumjung district. Chief administrative officer of the Dordi municipality, Hem Raj Kafle, confirmed that the marriage registration certificate was issued in compliance with the Supreme Court order and relevant government instructions. Taiwan is currently the only other Asian country to have legalized same-sex marriage.
