Kozhikode: MS Swaminathan’s daughter and former WHO chief scientist, Dr Soumya Swaminathan, has welcomed the Bharat Ratna for her father but pointed out that he would have been happy if it had come during his lifetime. She emphasized that while he received numerous awards and recognition, he was more motivated by the impact of his work on the ground and the gratitude and love he received from farmers. Soumya believes honoring Swaminathan as a scientist sends a powerful message to the youth. It shows that not only film stars, sportspersons, and celebrities deserve recognition, but also scientists who work tirelessly behind the scenes. According to her, scientific work has enormous implications and impact on people worldwide, and the country needs scientist role models for the youth. She expressed her satisfaction that the award came at a suitable time.
