Kota hostels use nets to become ‘suicide proof’

In an attempt to address the alarming number of student suicides, hostels in Kota, Rajasthan, are installing nets on their balconies and lobbies to make their buildings ‘suicide-proof’. Kota, often called the ‘coaching capital of India’, is known for its coaching centers that attract students from all over the country. However, the intense academic pressure has resulted in a rise in suicides among students.

According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 12,000 students, including those preparing for competitive exams, have taken their lives in Kota between 2013 and 2017. The high-pressure environment, isolation from family, and fear of failure have been identified as major contributing factors.

To address this issue, several hostels in Kota have started installing nets on balconies and lobbies to act as a physical barrier and deter suicide attempts. These nets are designed to prevent anyone from jumping or falling off from heights. The idea is to create a safe environment for students who may be overwhelmed by stress and other factors.

The move to install nets comes after the successful implementation of other preventive measures. Previously, spring-loaded fans were installed in hostels to prevent students from hanging themselves. While these measures may not completely eliminate the risk, they are seen as important steps towards curbing the alarming number of suicides.

The authorities and stakeholders hope that by making the buildings suicide-proof, they can create a more supportive environment for the students. Along with the nets, there is also an increased focus on mental health support. Counseling services and helplines are being provided to students, and efforts are being made to raise awareness about mental health issues.

Despite the actions taken, some argue that the systemic issues leading to student suicides, such as the intense competition and pressure to perform, need to be addressed. The responsibility for the students’ mental well-being falls not just on the hostels and coaching centers but also on the education system and society as a whole.

The installation of nets in Kota hostels is a step in the right direction, as it shows a commitment to protecting the students and providing them with a safer environment. However, it should also serve as a reminder that more needs to be done to address the underlying causes of the high student suicide rate in India.
