First Solar Commences Production of Solar PV Modules at Chennai Plant

First Solar, the American photovoltaic module manufacturer, has announced the commencement of solar PV module production at its Chennai plant for the Indian market. As one of the leading global providers of comprehensive photovoltaic (PV) solar systems, First Solar holds a unique position in the industry. The company’s Vice-President, in an interview, shed light on the significance of its manufacturing capabilities in meeting the increasing demand for solar PV modules in India.

With the Indian government’s thrust on renewable energy, the country has become a crucial market for solar power. First Solar recognizes this opportunity and has invested in establishing its manufacturing base in Chennai. By manufacturing PV modules locally, the company aims to meet the needs of Indian customers more efficiently and offer competitive pricing.

First Solar’s Vice-President stated that the Chennai plant’s production capacity is initially set at 1.2 GW, which can be scaled up to 3 GW, depending on the demand. This flexibility gives First Solar a distinct advantage in responding to the evolving market requirements. Additionally, by manufacturing in India, the company not only reduces lead times but also ensures compliance with the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

The Vice-President also discussed the quality and reliability of First Solar’s PV modules. He emphasized the importance of using advanced manufacturing technologies to produce high-quality products. First Solar’s modules undergo extensive testing to meet the industry’s reliability standards. With a strong focus on research and development, the company continually strives to improve the efficiency and performance of its modules.

In line with India’s ambitious renewable energy goals, First Solar plans to leverage its expertise to further support the country’s clean energy transition. The company aims to collaborate with various stakeholders and contribute to India’s vision of achieving 175 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2022. With its established manufacturing capabilities, First Solar is well-positioned to fulfill the growing demand for solar PV modules in India and drive the nation’s sustainable energy future.
