China’s Top Diplomat Urges Stabilisation of Bilateral Ties with India

China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, met with India’s Foreign Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Jakarta. During the meeting, Wang emphasised the need for stabilising bilateral ties and called for mutual support instead of suspicion between the two nations amidst simmering military tensions along their vast border. India and China share a 3,800-km border, much of which is poorly marked, and have a history of conflict. While ties had improved since the 1990s, a border clash in 2020 resulted in casualties on both sides, leading to increased military deployments. Both sides have engaged in multiple rounds of talks to ease tensions, but India remains cautious, describing the border situation as fragile and dangerous. Wang urged both countries to find a solution acceptable to both sides and not let specific issues define their overall relationship. The two nations also agreed to hold the next round of military commander-level talks on border issues soon. In addition to border tensions, India has intensified scrutiny of Chinese businesses and investments since 2020. Wang called for a fair and transparent business environment for Chinese companies in India. The meeting between the top diplomats highlights the importance of stabilising bilateral ties and finding peaceful resolutions amidst ongoing border disputes.
